Mayor Wheeler and Commissioner Rubio instrumental in bringing event to Portland to help boost local economy and bring new entertainment to the City
Portland, Ore. – Today, the City of Portland and Green Savoree Portland, LLC finalized a deal to bring the Formula E World Championship racing series to Portland on June 24, 2023. Portland will also see the debut of the Gen-3 Formula E race car – the fastest, lightest, most powerful, and efficient electric race car ever built.
“Portland is an environmental and sustainability leader,” said Mayor Ted Wheeler. “We're proud to host climate-friendly events like the Formula E race. Our green technology industry leads the way in innovating new sustainable products and services. Formula E will allow us to showcase this industry while providing fans of racing and electric vehicles a full agenda of entertaining and educational events.”
Formula E is the premier all-electric motorsport race series in the world and takes place in 11 international cities. This will be the first Formula E race in Portland, making it the 4th U.S. city to host a Formula E race since the league’s inception in 2015. Portland joins world cities like Berlin, London, and São Paulo in hosting a race this season.
“I was thrilled to work with Portland Parks and Recreation and staff at the Portland International Raceway to help bring the Formula E World Championship to the City of Roses,” said Commissioner Rubio. “Portland’s selection as a host city for this all-electric race is a huge win for racing fans, for our region’s economic recovery, and for climate action.”
The Formula E race follows the successful NASCAR Xfinity Series Mayor Wheeler helped bring to Portland in June of last year. Portland welcomed thousands of spectators and fans from all over the world who partook in racing events and boosted the local economy.
“Sport Oregon's success in bringing major sporting events to our state is reflected by the upcoming Formula E race at PIR and the strong partnership between Green Savoree Racing and the City of Portland. Of all the cities in North America that were considered, Portland was selected! We are proud and poised to welcome the world's leaders who are focused on sustainability to this event!" said Sport Oregon CEO Jim Etzel.
“Our team at Green Savoree Racing Promotions is thrilled to add a third event to our presence at Portland International Raceway further increasing the economic impact to Portland and the Pacific Northwest. Portland is the perfect host city for ABB FIA Formula E World Championship racing,” said Green Savoree Portland LLC Co-owner, President and COO Kevin Savoree. “Thank you to Mayor Wheeler, Commissioner Rubio and Commissioner Ryan, Portland Parks Director Adena Long, PIR General Manager Ron Huegli, Jim (Etzel) at Sport Oregon and all of their staff who helped bring this world-class event back to the U.S. Also, a huge thank you to Formula E Co Founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo and his team for the opportunity to host round 12 on the 2023 season schedule at PIR. These cars and drivers will deliver spectacular competition from a form of motorsports many will now get to experience for the very first time.”
